Archive: My Games

~2012-2014

I naively got into programming by making games in high school — here's some really old screenshots from the archives. Games were coded in Objective-C, graphics and characters were made in Adobe Illustrator. Apps were in the App Store up until 2014 when I stopped maintaining them. I was ~14 when I made my first app.

I owned the entire process: game design, graphic design, level design, and programming. After pouring many hours working after school and 2 summers I published 3 games for sale on the Apple App Store to play on my iPod Touch 4. The games were fun enough to play but most importantly they were a lot of fun to make. I programmed, made art, and designed the games myself. The experience gave me a lot of respect for game developers and taught me a lot about picking up new skills and the craftsmanship, joy, and challenge that goes into making something end to end — and got me into the career path I am in today.

Block Bear

A puzzle game where you help the bear escape by destroying blocks. My first app ever.

My second game — a fast-reaction game where you tap to avoid obstacles and get as far as possible. I was proud of how fast I shipped this one, but later realized the controls were hard to use for most people — a good early learning on UX.

Warrior Duck

An adventure game inspired by Peru's pre-Inca Moche culture, set on the Peruvian north coast. You play as "Moch" the warrior duck on a quest to recover stolen family relics.

This one made it to #15 in the games category in the Peruvian App Store. Why the Peruvian App Store? I was born and raised in Peru and was living there at the time — I marketed the game a bit through Facebook and enough people downloaded it. It didn't have that many downloads but it was pretty cool to see it ranked for a bit.
